The fight is over

Prompt: Rewrite an old poem.

I ache to keep pushing,
to keep this relationship alive,
(30 compressions for each breath)
but I know it's too late.

You're here, but you're gone,
a mere shell of the husband I used to know.
A vacant stare, an empty heart.

Everything else
         is just a formality now,

except the grief.

This is a rewrite of A Heart Is Broken which was originally written for the prompt 'A broken heart'.
